Durability

We have all been there. You fumble your phone, watch it tumble in slow motion, and hold your breath as it hits the pavement.

When we talk about Durability in our reviews and spec sheets, we aren’t just guessing if a phone is tough. We are looking at specific ratings and materials that decide if your phone survives that fall—or a splash in the sink.

Here is what you need to look for.

1. The IP Rating (Water & Dust)

You will often see a code like IP67 or IP68. This stands for “Ingress Protection,” but you can just think of it as a shield score.

  • The First Number (Dust): Usually a 6. This means the phone is dust-tight. Sand and dirt can’t get inside the hardware.
  • The Second Number (Water): This is the big one.
    • 7: The phone can handle a quick dip in water (up to 1 meter deep) for 30 minutes.
    • 8: The phone can go deeper (usually 1.5 meters) for 30 minutes.

Simple Rule: If you see IP68, it’s safe in the rain or a quick drop in the pool. If there is no rating, keep it dry!

2. The Glass (Scratch vs. Crack)

Most modern phones use chemically strengthened glass, like Gorilla Glass or Ceramic Shield.

  • Scratch Resistance: This protects against keys and coins in your pocket.
  • Shatter Resistance: This protects the screen from cracking when dropped.
  • The Trade-off: Interestingly, glass that is very hard (hard to scratch) can sometimes be more brittle (easier to crack). The newest phones try to balance both, but glass is still glass. It can break.

3. The Frame (Metal vs. Plastic)

The bones of the phone matter, too.

  • Aluminum/Steel: Feels premium and strong, but if you drop it, it might dent.
  • Plastic: It doesn’t feel as fancy, but it actually handles shock very well. It bounces rather than bending or shattering.

The Bottom Line

No phone is invincible. Even if a device has an IP68 rating and Gorilla Glass Victus, “durable” does not mean “unbreakable.”

We list these specs so you know how careful you need to be. A high durability score means peace of mind—but we still recommend a good case.
