Bluetooth - details

Bluetooth used to be a headache. It drained your battery, the connection dropped constantly, and the music sounded terrible.

Those days are gone. Modern Bluetooth is efficient, stable, and capable of delivering audio that rivals a wired connection. When checking the specs on GSM Aura, there are two things to look for: the Version and the Codecs.

1. The Version Number (Range & Stability)

Every few years, the Bluetooth standard gets an upgrade.

  • Bluetooth 5.0: The baseline for modern phones. It doubled the speed and quadrupled the range compared to the old 4.2 standard.
  • Bluetooth 5.2 / 5.3: This is what you want today. It introduces LE Audio (Low Energy). It allows for better battery life and more stable connections in crowded places (like a gym full of people using wireless buds).
  • Bluetooth 5.4: The newest standard. It improves secure connections for smart tags (like finding your keys) and ultra-low power devices.

2. The Codecs (Sound Quality)

This is the hidden spec that audiophiles obsess over.
A “Codec” is the language your phone uses to package the music and send it to your headphones. If your phone and headphones don’t speak the same language, the audio quality drops.

  • SBC: The “Basic” codec. Every device supports this. It works, but it sounds a bit compressed (like a standard MP3).
  • AAC: The “Apple” standard. If you use an iPhone or AirPods, this is what you are using. It is efficient and sounds great.
  • aptX / aptX HD (Qualcomm): The “Android” favorite. It offers higher bitrate (more detail) and lower latency (less lag when watching movies).
  • LDAC (Sony) / LHDC: The “Hi-Res” kings. These codecs can transmit 3x more data than standard Bluetooth. If you listen to Lossless audio (Apple Music or Tidal) and have expensive Sony headphones, you need a phone that supports LDAC to hear the difference.

3. A2DP and LE

You will often see these acronyms in our list.

  • A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile): Just means the phone can stream stereo music.
  • LE (Low Energy): Means the phone can stay connected to your smartwatch or fitness tracker all day without killing your battery.

The Connectivity Check

A cool feature of Bluetooth 5.0+ is Dual Audio.
This allows your phone to connect to two pairs of Bluetooth headphones at the same time. You and a friend can watch the same movie on a flight, or listen to the same playlist, each using your own earbuds.

The GSM Aura Verdict:
If you buy expensive wireless headphones (like the Sony WH-1000XM5), check that your phone supports LDAC or aptX Adaptive. Without it, you aren’t getting the sound quality you paid for.
