What is VoLTE?
You have probably seen it on our spec sheets or noticed the little icon in the top corner of your phone screen. But what does VoLTE actually mean, and why should you care?
Here is the simple breakdown.
The Basic Definition
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE.
In the past, your phone had two jobs. It used 4G (LTE) for fast internet, but when you made a phone call, it had to drop down to an older, slower network (like 2G or 3G) just to carry your voice.
VoLTE changes that. It lets your phone keep using the fast 4G data lane to send your voice. It turns your call into digital data packets—kind of like how WhatsApp or Skype calls work, but using your carrier’s main network.
Why Is It Better?
There are three big reasons you want a phone with VoLTE:
1. “HD Voice” Quality
Old calls often sounded fuzzy or muffled. Because VoLTE uses the 4G network, it can carry three times more data than 3G. This leads to High Definition (HD) Voice. It sounds crisp, rich, and clear—like the person is standing right next to you, rather than shouting through a tin can.
2. Surf and Talk at the Same Time
Before VoLTE, if you were on a call, your internet speed would drop or cut out completely because the phone switched to 3G. With VoLTE, your phone stays on 4G. You can browse the web, check maps, or scroll through social media while you are talking, and the speed stays fast.
3. Faster Connections
Have you ever dialed a number and waited 5 or 6 seconds to hear it ring? That pause was your phone switching networks. VoLTE connects calls almost instantly. You hit dial, and it rings.
Do I Need It?
Yes. As carriers around the world shut down their old 3G towers to make room for 5G, VoLTE is becoming mandatory. Without it, your phone might not be able to make calls at all in some areas.
When you look at the Specs section on our site, checking for “VoLTE Support” ensures your phone is future-proof and ready for clear, reliable calls.
